Less than two weeks ago, several racist attacks against black students at MSU were brought to light, including the hanging a black doll by a noose in the bio-chemistry building, having a KKK party in the dorm, and the writing of racists epithets on the dorm room doors of black students.
In response, over a thousand, mostly black students attended a quickly-called student meeting to express their anger and to demand immediate, effective action against the racists.
“The testimony of the many students who spoke at the meeting made clear that while the racist white students only speak for a very small minority of white students on campus, racist incidents are not rare and hostile campus climate is a fact of everyday life faced by black and Latino/a students at MSU” said Monica Smith, BAMN Organizer. “The banning of affirmative action by Proposal 2 has made the racists bolder, and we are here to say ‘we are here to stay; we will not be treated like second class citizens.”
Many students also voiced their outrage at the MSU Administration’s response to these attacks, which was to claim that ‘Such behavior is not representative of MSU’s values”, while also defending the racist attacks as “free speech.”
In response, BAMN (The Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration & Immigrant Rights & Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary) has called for a rally in front the Hannah Administration Building to demand the implementation of the following demands, voted on at an open meeting at MSU on October 6th:
We DEMAND that the MSU Administration and Board of Trustees:
- Do everything legally permissible to increase underrepresented minority student enrollment at MSU;
- Go on record that the ban on affirmative action, Prop 2, should be declared unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause
- Do not punish black and other minority students for standing up for themselves against racist attacks;
- Investigate racist incidents and hold open hearings in which the racist students are put on trial, so that they can be identified by the student body; and that the racist students be forced to denounce their racist actions or face further disciplinary action, even up to expulsion;Do everything legally permissible to increase underrepresented minority student enrollment
- When a black or minority student is attacked, force the white student who committed the racist attack to leave the dorm or face disciplinary consequences.
