Demand the Immediate Resignation of Chancellor Birgeneau
Independent Student/Community Public Hearing:
Police Brutality, Privatization, and the New Student & Civil Rights Movement
Monday, November 21 at 7:00pm, Room 110 Wheeler Hall (UC Berkeley)
Hear from students and protesters who will testify about their commitment to public education and their experiences being brutalized at the Nov. 9 Occupy Cal Rally. All testimony will be videotaped and made publicly available, and will be included as evidence in the lawsuit filed by BAMN against the UC Berkeley administration and police.
Privatization and police brutality go hand in hand. The corporate and private partnerships that Birgeneau has cultivated for UC Berkeley are hostile to protracted student struggle and unrest. We must defend and continue to build our integrated, student-led movement to fight for integration and the right to public education for all.
Our new movement is getting stronger. STUDENTS are now the force able to determine the actions and character of our campus. Students, not the administration or the police, are now setting the terms and conditions of our university education. Already we’ve won victories: UC President Mark Yudof is backpedaling on his initial 81% fee-hike proposal; the UC Regents cancelled their meeting because of our movement’s intention to mobilize; and in the face of our continuing call for his resignation, Chancellor Birgeneau had to issue a declaration of amnesty for many of the students arrested Nov. 9.
Let’s keep fighting for more. Now is the time for our movement to go on the offensive
