In July 2012, the UCLA Center for Labor Research and Education and the National Labor College (NLC) announced they would establish the NATIONAL DREAM UNIVERSITY (NDU) to educate students from across the nation, regardless of immigration status and regardless of their state of residence.
NDU would establish a one-year program beginning January 2013 that undocumented students from across the country would be eligible for at an affordable rate. New Jim Crow laws against immigrants means that undocumented immigrant students currently are banned from attending Georgia’s top public universities, are banned from receiving federal college financial aid and in most states are banned from receiving state college financial aid.
NDU stands on the important principle set by California with last year’s passage of the California DREAM Act: EDUCATION IS A RIGHT and students without papers deserve an education, equal treatment, and dignity.
However, on September 14, UCLA announced it was cancelling the National Dream University after attacks from California Assemblyman Tom Donnelly – a racist who advocates an Arizona style anti-immigrant law for California – as well as Fox News and other right-wing news organizations.
Instead of standing-up for immigrant students – documented and undocumented – the UCLA Administration and UC President Mark Yudof immediately folded in the face of this racist, anti-immigrant attack – declaring that “the agreement has been declared void and UCLA has directed the Labor Center to suspend all work on National Dream University.”
The UCLA administration and UC President Yudof have repeatedly stated their support for the Dream Act and increased access to university education for undocumented students. They must put their words into deeds now.
THEREFORE, WE THE UNDERSIGNED:
- Demand that UCLA reauthorize the National Dream University to open in January 2013.
- Demand the passage of the Federal DREAM Act so that undocumented immigrant students have an equal right to gain citizenship and access financial aid.

En julio del 2012, el Centro Laboral de UCLA y el Colegio National Labor (una universidad) anunciaron que iban a establecer la Universidad Nacional de Sueños (NDU) para educar a estudiantes por toda la nación, sin importar su estatus inmigratoria y sin importar su estado de residencia.
La NDU establecerá un programa de un año, empezando en enero del 2012 para el cual estudiantes indocumentados de alrededor del país serian elegibles, y por una tarifa asequible. Las nuevas leyes estilo Jim Crow (sistema de segregación) en contra de inmigrantes significa que estudiantes inmigrantes indocumentados al presente son prohibidos asistir a las mejores universidades de Georgia, son prohibidos recibir ayuda financiera federal para el colegio y en muchos estados son prohibidos recibir ayuda financiera estatal para el colegio.
La NDU se para en el principio importante puesto por California con la promulgación del Acta de los Sueños de California el año pasado: EDUCACIÓN ES UN DERECHO y estudiantes sin papeles se merecen una educación, tratamiento igual, y dignidad.
Sin embargo, el 14 de septiembre, UCLA anuncio que iba cancelar la NDU después de ataques de parte del asambleísta de California Tom Donnelly – un racista que quiere una ley anti-inmigrante estilo Arizona para California – y también Fox News y otras organizaciones derechistas de medios de comunicación.
En lugar de pararse y defender a estudiantes inmigrantes – documentados e indocumentados – la administración de UCLA y el Presidente de las UC’s Mark Yudof inmediatamente se rindieron cuando enfrentaron este ataque racista y anti-inmigrante – declarando que “el acuerdo ha sido declarado inválido y UCLA ha dirigido al Centro Laboral que suspenda todo el trabajo hacia la Universidad Nacional de Sueños.”
La administración de UCLA y el Presidente de las UC’s Mark Yudo f han declarado una y otra vez su apoyo por el Acta de los Sueños y el aumento al acceso a la educación universitaria para estudiantes indocumentados. Ellos tienen que hacer sus palabras en acciones ahora.
POR CONSIGUIENTE, NOSOTROS LOS AFIRMADOS:
Demandamos que UCLA autorice de nuevo la Universidad Nacional de Sueños para abrir en enero del 2013.
Demandamos la promulgación del Acta de los Sueños Federal para que estudiantes inmigrantes indocumentados tengan un derecho igual a recibir ciudadanía y el acceso a la ayuda financiera.
