Public Tribunal: “Putting the UCB Administration and Privatization ON TRIAL”

A year ago, students and community members made history as part of Occupy Cal, standing up for public education and standing our ground in the face of brutal police repression and administration cynicism.

Join the independent public tribunal into UC Berkeley administrators’ police repression against Occupy Cal on Nov. 9, 2011. BAMN filed a $15 million lawsuit against the University administration and the police on behalf of 29 plaintiffs for police brutality, false arrest, and violation of the First Amendment. One month from now, lawyers representing UCB administrators and police will argue for dismissal of the case — claiming administrators had nothing to do with the police beatings on the day and that their actions were only motivated by the need to “prevent camping.”

Internal obtained by BAMN’s legal team show how the administrators chose to repress the attempted encampment because it opposed their views in support of tuition hikes and privatization. The evidence also shows the large role played by private donors in shaping the administration’s actions. At this tribunal, we will share and discuss these emails and other evidence from the Nov. 9, 2011 Occupy Cal protest; we will organize to keep this case alive and prevent the University from getting it thrown out of court.
