***Keep safe from COVID-19: always wear a mask in public.***
Federal judge Dolly Gee ordered ICE to release child immigrant detainees by an extended deadline of July 27th to avoid the dangers of a COVID-19 outbreak within the detention centers. She described the dangerous conditions of COVID-19 in these facilities as being “on fire.” But even even before the deadline passed, Judge Gee backpedaled. Instead of ordering ICE to release all the children WITH their families, she instead announced that her own order was “unenforceable” and set a subsequent hearing for August 7th. ICE is refusing to release the children unless they can separate them from their parents. The shameful failures of the courts and the vicious racism of ICE have left countless migrant children and their families in these concentration camps, still “on fire.”
The movement is the only power that can force ICE to release the children and their families. We are continuing to demand that all children be released with their families-and that all ICE detainees be released from these concentration camps NOW! These facilities are COVID-19 hotspots and will become death camps for immigrants! We have to fight against the genocidal policy of immigrant detention during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Donald Trump is now weaker than ever, but not yet defeated. As his prospects for re-election diminish, Trump desperately seeks to whip up his racist base by appealing to their racism and nationalism. He is testing his ability to stay in power, even if he loses in the presidential election, with the help of a loyal armed force based on Homeland Security federal agents deployed to American cities to repress the national movement and test their loyalty to Trump’s authoritarian political program. Trump’s approach is moving farther to the right, repression of our movement and racist demagogic and xenophobic attacks on black and Latino/a and other minority and immigrant communities. The danger of an authoritarian police state under Trump is now more real than ever. However, it’s only possible if our movement takes a step back and relies on the law or a shameful Democratic Party that has failed to stop Trump’s worst attacks since he became president. The liberal politicians are, at this point, completely disconnected from our national movement. We must continue to fight independently of political parties, expressing our power in the streets. We must take seriously the danger Trump represents, but recognize now is also the time to get rid of him once and for all.
This week, after losing the case around DACA in the Supreme Court and subsequent order by a federal judge to demand USCIS start accepting new DACA applications, the Trump administration announced they will not process new DACA applications. He has ordered the closing down of the Chinese embassy in Houston. He is flailing about, failing to deal with a worsening pandemic nationwide. He demands school reopening and continues to threaten cuts to federal funding for vital pandemic related programs like free testing. But Trump’s biggest overreach is his order for federal agents from homeland security, including border patrol and ICE agents, to attack protestors in Portland, Oregon. This is the closest Trump has been to creating a fascist police state.
On Wednesday, July 29th Trump agreed to withdraw the special units of Customs Border Patrol CBP and ICE Agents, from Portland, after subsequently withdrawing from Seattle the previous day. This move is in response to the heroic response of the people in Portland and mobilized national solidarity responses around the country. Nonetheless, this does not guarantee Trump won’t use federal agents to repress the movement in other cities, nor should the movement lower our guard and take any politician’s word that federal agents will completely leave those cities. Trump continues to threaten to send federal agents to other cities all over the country like Detroit, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Albuquerque, Cleveland, Milwaukee, and Oakland.
The response of city political leaderships, specifically of Democratic Party mayors like Duggan and Lightfoot in Detroit and Chicago, willing to “welcome” or “work with” Trump’s federal troops into their cities, is despicable and must be condemned. This gross subservience to Trump undercuts and threatens the victory of the people in Portland and Seattle. Having Democratic Party mayors and governors from large cities, especially predominantly black and Latino/a cities where the movement has been strong, enables Trump to continue his repressive policy nationwide. Detroit, a majority black and growing immigrant Latino/a city has marched nonstop against racist police brutality and under BAMN’s leadership is now in the national spotlight in the fight against school reopening. There is no other reason why Duggan would roll out the red carpet to Trump’s federal agents, but to attempt to shut down the struggle against summer school reopening. The racist experiment on the communities of Detroit of summer school reopening is central to force the reopening of the Michigan economy and to set an example for the whole nation. The disgusting need to prioritize American capital profits, even in the midst of a deadly pandemic, along with a deeply rooted fear of a progressive mass militant movement, are shared goals and ideology of Democratic Party politicians and Trump. If these mayors are not prepared to defend the democratic rights of the residents in their cities and oppose the creation of a police state, the movement must call for their resignation. This is yet another confirmation of why the movement must be independent of the political establishments and take matters into our own hands to defeat Trump and change our society for the better.
This overreach of Trump in amassing a federal force of repression loyal to him alone, is Trump’s test for the prospect of mobilizing a fascist coup in the event of losing the presidential election. Trump has threatened that if he were to lose the election, he would refuse to accept the results. Trump has also this week made statements about delaying the election citing the excuse of unfair mail in ballots voting during the pandemic. The only way to do this is with the support of a loyal armed force of suppression like Hitler had with his SS in the rise to power of the Nazi party. Our movement must be vigilant and come out to defend the people of Portland and the national movement against violent repression and the ever more real threat of the creation of an authoritarian police state. But most importantly, we must fight to remove Donald Trump before the election and prevent a Trump attempt of a fascist coup.
We have won many great victories during this movement, including the defense of DACA and the protection of abortion rights and LGBTQ rights in the workplace. We can build on this momentum to demand even more, including citizenship rights for all immigrants and the removal of Donald Trump from office. But to win we have to keep marching in the streets!
A new civil rights movement that started with the people of Minneapolis, has enabled us to fight for real equality like never before. We should not rely on any politician or the November election to change society for us. Our real power is in mass mobilizations in the streets! The movement can fight to demand the jailing of every killer cop! The movement can fight to keep our schools closed to keep our students safe from COVID19! The movement can fight to shut down immigrant concentration camps! All of this can be done if we keep fighting on the streets!
