On July 27, 2015, BAMN filed a brief in its lawsuit representing 21 plaintiffs suing UC-Berkeley administrators, University of California Police Department (UCPD), and Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, demanding the right to put them on trial for attempting to suppress the new student and civil rights movement by unleashing police brutality against the “Occupy Cal” protest on November 9, 2011.
The defendants have filed motions for summary judgment, asking the judge to free them from having to stand trial for excessive force, false arrest, and violation of free-speech rights. BAMN’s brief systematically presents evidence and legal precedent, showing that the police’s and administrator’s actions were excessive and aimed at repressing political speech and must be reviewed by the community and a jury.
The success of this lawsuit will depend on the continued growth of the new student and civil rights movement. Contact BAMN today!
